The German footballer Mesut Özil has opposed the plans for the Super League
The player took to Twitter to share an emotional statement about the new plans for the Super League. He is among the many players who have condemned the plans on social media.
Özil said: “Kids grow up dreaming to win the World Cup and the Champions League – not any Super League. The enjoyment of big games is that they only happen once or twice a year, not every week. Really hard to understand for all football fans out there…”

This comes after fans, managers and politicians have also condemned the plans for a Super League.
Boris Johnson said: “Plans for a European Super League would be very damaging for football”, adding that he supports the football authorities who are taking action against the plans.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United are among the football clubs who are set to join the new Super League.
In a statement, the ESL said: “Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.”
“Going forward, the founding clubs look forward to holding discussions with Uefa and Fifa to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new league and for football as a whole.”
