The Alien franchise is currently in the unusual situation of expanding at both ends – with a sequel (Alien 5) and a sequel to the prequel (Prometheus 2) in development.
Thankfully, fans have been given a bit of clarification as to what the heck is going on.
Apparently, Ridley Scott is insisting that his sequel to 2012’s Prometheus must come before Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 film.
District 9 director Blomkamp is currently working on the latest sequel to the Alien franchise, but might have to hold back for the time being despite releasing some concept art to fans already.

This perhaps gives us some clues about Prometheus 2 – as Scott is possibly planning to drop a bombshell that could be explored in Alien.
Or maybe he just wants to go first and be done with it.
As of now, Prometheus 2 is expecting a 2017 release while Alien 5 will likely follow a year later.
