Companion, an app designed by five university students in America, is taking the digital world by storm.
The app allows smartphone users to let friends track their journey home via GPS on an online map.
If the person is interfered with on their walk home (if they stray from their path, start running, get their headphones pulled out of their ears, etc.) then a notification will be sent to their phone.
If they do not confirm that they are alright within 15 seconds, or if a real emergency is taking place, the phone will begin to blast loud noises to scare criminals from the scene and give the tracker the immediate option of calling the police.
While this might seem a touch heavy-handed to some, it’s better to be safe than sorry and this app could really make a difference if given a chance.
The app is, as of yet, unavailable to people outside the US but the developers are aware of this and are working on a solution.
