In a week where every facet of Meghan Markle’s life has been put under the microscope, one characteristic that’s stood out is her outspokenness – not a trait you’d necessarily associate with a royal.
Meghan’s often spoken out about issues that are important to her, particularly gender equality.
We’ve all seen the speech that she gave at the UN about women’s rights and this clip of her lambasting Donald Trump for his misogyny.
Now, newly-unearthed footage of Meghan as an 11-year-old shows that she was just as passionate about equality back then.
Speaking at the UN in 2015, she said that as a child had she had been annoyed by a sexist ad for washing-up liquid she’d seen on TV.
“Women are fighting greasy pots and pans,” the ad claimed.
Inside Editon this week found the footage of Meghan speaking about the offending ad on Nickelodeon’s Nick News in 1993.
“I’m don’t think it’s right for kids to grow up thinking these things that just mom does everything,” young Meghan said.
Meghan wrote to the product’s manufacturers Procter and Gamble about the ad and to her surprise, the voiceover was changed to say “People are fighting greasy pots and pans”.
Proof if ever we needed it that this one is well able for anything.
