Sherlock Holmes 3 will happen, says Robert Downey Jr.

Paul Moore

We’re going back to Baker Street.

While most people would name Robert Downey Jr’s ‘comeback’ film asĀ Iron Man, one of his most underrated films continues to fly under the radar, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. If you haven’t seen Shane Black’s wonderfulĀ neo-noir black comedy then you’re missing out but after charming us all as Tony Stark, Downey Jr. cemented his return to the Hollywood A-list by appearing in Guy Ritchieā€™sĀ Sherlock HolmesĀ in 2009.

Starring alongsideĀ Jude Law as Dr. Watson, the cinematic return of the beloved character saw the brilliant detective engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis – Mark Strong’s Lord Blackwood – who wanted to destroyĀ all of England. Lucky for England, that didn’t happen but the film did prove to be a massive commercial success and it came as no surprise to see that a sequel was instantly approved,Ā Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

After that epic game of chess againstĀ Professor Moriarty onĀ ReichenbachĀ Falls, plenty of people were curious about two things. 1) Was the beloved sleuth still alive? 2) Would we be getting another film?

We’re happy to say that ‘yes’ is the answer to both of those questions because in an interview withĀ EWĀ to promote Avengers: Infinity War, Downey Jr. casually mentioned that he still plans on makingĀ Sherlock Holmes 3Ā as well as several other projects. Hereā€™s what he said: ā€œā€¦Weā€™re looking at another Sherlock Holmes, weā€™re developing Perry Mason for HBO. I still want to do Pinocchio.ā€

Regarding the third film inĀ Guy Ritchieā€™s Sherlock Holmes franchise, the project has been stuck inĀ development hell for quite some time. Iron Man 3ā€˜s Drew Pearce was initially hired toĀ write the script in 2011 but that didn’t come to fruition. Five years later, the studio hired a group of writers to flesh out the story and write the script. Unfortunately, after a series of delays,Ā Sherlock Holmes 3Ā has yet to go into production butĀ Downey Jr’s latest comments are the clearest indication that it will happen.

As for the major players involved,Ā Ritchieā€™s next film is the live-action adaptation of Aladdin – that’s currently in post-production – while Watson and Holmes are tied up in the MCU respectively –Ā Law is working onĀ Captain MarvelĀ and Downey Jr. has just completed Avengers: Infinity War.
