Any Sonic Death Monkey?
What came first, the music or the misery? Well, in the case of Rob, the main character in Nick Hornby’s superb book, they’re not mutually exclusive. Since being released in ’95, Hornby’s book became a cult classic because it effectively portrayed the anxieties, neurosis and fear of commitment that some men have when it comes to dating.
It also perfectly tapped into everyone’s desire to make ‘Top 5′ lists and categorise every little snippet of pop-culture. Nick Hornby was able to dissect the male psyche and men’s attitude towards romance in a way that’s honest, intelligent and painfully accurate by juxtaposing all the neuroses that us guys have about romance alongside the nerdy tendencies of music lovers to categorise and over-think things.
After selling over a million copies, it was no surprise to see a film adaptation and Stephen Frears’ movie was absolutely wonderful. Smart, funny and incredibly honest, the film also highlighted the snobbery of the so-called ‘music geeks’ while the decision to cast Jack Black as the opinionated Barry was a stroke of genius.
Aside from this, John Cusack was perfectly cast as Rob Gordon, the thirty-something owner of Championship Vinyl that’s constantly dwelling on his romantic past after his latest heartbreak.
We’ve previously included it in our list of the very best rom-coms of all time and it appears that a TV version of the book is coming.
Oh yeah, it also features a kick-ass soundtrack.
Deadline are reporting that Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka (Bull, Ugly Betty) are developing their own adaptation for Disney’s new streaming service but the main difference is that the lead role will be female.
The Midnight Radio producing team are also involved in this adaptation and members of that group have previously written Venom, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the actual High Fidelity film.
The report states that the show has been “described as a departure from the book and the movie while still capturing the romantic comedy and authentic spirit of the original source materials. It centers on a record store owner — a female take on the character played in the movie by Cusack — talking straight to the camera as she chronicles past relationships.”
Launching next year, Disney’s new streaming service will feature hundreds of Disney films as well as new content.
We wonder if Sonic Death Monkey are going to make an appearance?
