A Quiet Place is having the strangest effect on film fans

Paul Moore

Even the film’s director finds it hilarious. Unique and weird.

After grossing $50m over its opening weekend, it’s clear that A Quiet Place is making a big noise with film fans. Ever since the superb premise was revealed, horror fans knew that John Krasinski’s film had the potential to be incredibly different and we’re delighted to say that it has delivered in spades.

In case you’re not familiar with the premise, it’s quite simple.

A family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you. Make a noise and die.

With a rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a very impressive haul at the box-office, it’s clear that horror fans were hungry for this type of film.

Speaking of going hungry, plenty of cinemagoers have noted that the experience of watching A Quiet Place is unique to anything else because people aren’t munching on popcorn, snacking on sweets or slurping on their drinks.

Yes, that’s right.

A Quiet Place is so scary and inventive that people are afraid to eat their food. Now that’s the sign of a good horror film!

This strange effect didn’t go unnoticed on the writer, director and star of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski.

JOE’s Rory Cashin caught up with the star of The Office and Away We Go last week and Krasinski revealed that he got a good kick out of the fact that his film has changed the cinema habits of the audience.

“In this movie, you have this very rare thing where people say ‘you have to see this in the theatre.’ If I say that, I sound pretentious, but if the people coming out of it say ‘ you have to see this in the theatre’ then it’s great and the reason why is that I think you have to live under the rules of this family. You have to become really quiet. The other thing I love is that there are people that are taking visual imprints of those people that are eating popcorn. We had some people at the screening who said” the film is really, really good, but that’s the guy who was eating popcorn,” said Krasinski.

Emily Blunt also couldn’t help but laugh at this bizarre phenomenon.  “I think it’s the interactive experience because you don’t want to be that person who’s munching popcorn and everyone is saying ‘shut up, you’re going to get them killed!”

With such good reviews, A Quiet Place might be in contention for some awards but we’re fairly certain that it already holds a unique accolade. This could be the first film where people are walking out of the cinema with a full box of popcorn.
