We finally know when the PlayStation 5 will be coming out

We've got a little while to wait yet...

We’ve got a little while to wait yet…

In the last few months alone, the PS4 has gone from strength to strength, with some iconic releases like Horizon: Zero Dawn and the rebooted God Of War standing alongside some of the highlights of the platform such as the Uncharted series and The Last Of Us.

However, as is always the case when it comes to technology, there is the imminent arrival of the next generation on the horizon, and gamers are never quite sure how much more time they’ve got with their pride and joy before it gets dumped for the sexier upgrade.

The first PlayStation arrived in September 1995, then the PS2 came in November 2000, followed by the PS3 in March 2007, and then came the PS4 in November 2013.

On that basis, the time period in between launches has ranged from five years to about six and a half years, and this November will see the PS4 turning five years old, so is it time to start saving up the pennies for the next generation?

Apparently not!

As per the Wall Street Journal, the new head of Sony’s PlayStation division, John Kodera, stated: “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step.”

“We’re no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things.”

So it will likely be well into 2021 before we get our hands on the PS5.

This would seem to be in reference to the PlayStation Plus network, which allows players access to a Netflix-but-for-games streaming service, a constantly updating catalogue that will balance out the fact that 2018 will be the first year since the PS4 was released that less consoles have been sold than the year before.

Still though, the currently 75 million strong audience have some crackers to play in the upcoming year alone, including Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last Of Us 2, and what looks to us like a highlight for the entire PS4’s run, Spider-Man, which is due for release this September.
