Fans rage as sad-looking Donny van de Beek watches on from the stand again

‘He doesn’t deserve this’

It’s becoming a regular feature of Manchester United games. Without fail, at some point in the last 10 minutes of a game Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men aren’t winning, the camera cuts to Donny van de Beek, sitting alone, looking sad… Really, really sad.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. Much was made of his arrival in the summer. Signed for £40m from Ajax, the Dutchman was supposed to be the first of a summer squad overhaul, a player who would start every game and inject a bit of pace and dynamism into the United side.

For reasons unknown, things haven’t quite worked out that way. At least not yet.

And so, on a day where his boyhood club won 13-0, Van de Beek was again reduced to a spectating role as United drew 0-0 at home to Chelsea; again, he was picked out by the cameras.

His continuing omission from Solskjaer’s side has baffled many of those watching, with his name trending yet again after full-time despite him not kicking a ball all game:

United, who have now failed to win all three of their home games this season, will now welcome RB Leipzig to Old Trafford in the Champions League in midweek.

It remains to be seen if Van de Beek will finally be given another chance in that game.
