James Bond star Sir Sean Connery has passed away at the age of 90, his family have revealed.

Connery was best known for becoming the first actor to take the James Bond role to the big screen. While it had previously been shown only on radio, TV and in comic books, Sean Connery was the first to star in a film franchise as 007.

His first James Bond film was Dr. No (1962), and he starred as 007 in a total of seven James Bond films. After his debut as Bond in Dr. No, Connery starred in the next four Bond movies: From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), and You Only Live Twice (1967). He later returned as James Bond in two further films, Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Never Say Never Again (1983).

His performance as Bond was so iconic that the American Film Institute (AFI) voted him the third-greatest hero in the history of cinema.

His acting career spanned forty years, and he officially retired from the stage in 2006. His honours two Bafta awards, three Golden Globes and an Oscar he won in 1988 for best supporting actor in The Untouchables.

Some of the other films he starred in include The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

Connery regularly topped public polls as the greatest James Bond actor of all time.

He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000.
