“You can weigh 14 stone and knock a man spark out, a 25 stone man. It doesn’t really matter, the weight”
Tyson Fury has played down the importance of his weight, saying it “doesn’t matter” ahead of the Friday weigh-in for Saturday’s WBC heavyweight title fight with Deontay Wilder.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the fight in Las Vegas this weekend, the ‘Gypsy King’ said that he didn’t have a target weight in mind and that on the night, it will have no advantage on whether he can beat his opponent.
“It doesn’t matter – weight, size, anything like that to beat anybody,” said Fury. “You can weigh 14 stone and knock a man spark out, a 25 stone man. It doesn’t really matter, the weight.
“I’m not aiming for a specific weight. I’m just eating plenty of food. I’ve trained hard enough and that’s it. Whatever I weigh in on the night, I weigh in at.”
The 33-year-old also spoke about whether he fears losing to Wilder in the third and final of the trilogy of fights between the two, reiterating that “failure is not an option”.
He said: “I’ve just got to go in there and do what I do best. That’s it. No more, no less.
“What’s meant to be in life, will be and what’s not meant to be, won’t be. I’m going in there, I’ve done all my training, the rest is in God’s hands.
“Fate will be fate. You can’t escape it, no matter what we do in life. Everything happens in life for a reason and I’ve come this far, and I’m still continuing up this road, so we’ll see where it takes me.”
Meanwhile it has been confirmed that there will be no face-off at tonight’s weigh-in after Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum said that the process treats fighters like “animals” and that it will not be necessary.
The weigh-in will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at 10pm British time.
