Western Bulldogs’ Mitch Wallis suffered a horror injury during the loss to St Kilda on Saturday.

The 23-year-old tried was looking to boot the ball away under pressure from Saint Shane Savage in midfield. Wallis tried to kick, but the contact threw him off balance and instead of connecting with the ball, his right foot thundered into the back of his left ankle and went limp.

The youngster immediately fell to the ground clutching his knee and screaming in agony which brought the game to a halt for several minutes. After receiving some treatment, he was taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to hospital. After the game it was confirmed that he had fractured both his tibia and fibula.

ABC Radio host Tim Hodges covered the game, describing the scene that transpired on the pitch as “heartbreaking”. Like everyone else watching it live, Hodges knew from the moment Wallis went down that the player had suffered a serious injury.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. Bob Murphy is down here and he’s weeping uncontrollably.”

“They were haunting scenes and sounds, but unfortunately all the players had to walk past him and they came out of the meeting just so they could offer him some support.”
