Game of Thrones gets staggering 24 Emmy nominations

Ben Kenyon

How do yer like them dragons?

They’ll be dancing in the streets of King’s Landing at the news Game of Thrones has cleaned up with 24 Emmy nominations. Yes, 24.

Every man and his dog seems to be a fan of the blood-thirsty, sex-filled violence free-for-all fantasy show…we can’t think why.

It looks like the head honchos at the Emmys might have a penchant for Jon Snow and Co. too.

It’s up for almost every award going including the top gong Outstanding Drama Series, up against Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men.

American Horror: Freak Show got a paltry 19 nods in comparison.

Surprisingly, none of the GoT gang were up for Lead Actor or Actress awards, but Peter Dinklage (Tyrion), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) and Emilia Clarke (mother of dragons) are all in with a chance for silverware for their supporting roles.

How many more people have to die in the Seven Kingdoms before someone gives them an award or two?

The Brits haven’t done too bad overall.  Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall) is up against comedy God Ricky Gervais and David Oyelowo in the Best Actor in a mini-series or film category.

Gervais’ role in the Derek Special earned him the nod, while Oyelowo’s nomination came from his part as Peter Snowden in Nightingale.

Damian Lewis is nominated for Best Supporting Actor as Henry VIII in Wolf Hall.

The award ceremony will be held on September 20.
