The band weren’t told about the incident until after their performance.
An acrobat died after falling to the ground from a height of 100 metres in front of a crowd of thousands at a festival in Spain.
According to The Telegraph, the acrobat has been named as 42-year old Pedro Aunion Monroy, who had been working as a director of a performing arts company in Brighton.
Monroy had been performing in a box hanging from a crane approximately 100 feet from the ground and though he appeared to be wearing a harness, music fans at the Mad Cool Festival in Madrid looked on in shock as he dangled from the box temporarily before falling to his death.
Emergency services officials tended to Monroy after the fall but he died shortly afterwards.
With no announcements being made to the crowd, Green Day took to the stage at approximately 10.45pm and were only told after they had finished their performance about the terrible accident that had taken place earlier in the evening.
Green Day posted the following message on their Twitter account on Friday night.

Despite criticism on social media, the organisers of the Mad Cool Festival decided not to postpone it, citing security reasons in a statement released on Friday night.

“Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident that the aerial dancer suffered during the second day of the festival,” the statement read.
“For security reasons, the festival decided to continue with its programming.
“We send our most sincere condolences to all his family.
“Tomorrow Saturday 8, during the festival, we will render a heartfelt tribute to the artist.”
Kings of Leon are due to headline the third and last night of the festival, with M.I.A., Foster the People and Manic Street Preachers amongst the other acts on the line-up.
