Jimi Hendrix died 45 years ago today after swallowing nine sleeping tablets. He was 27.
But let’s remember him for what he was genius at; mesmerising guitar skills and extraordinary music, an on stage shaman.
It’s well documented he had a stint in the Army, which didn’t go too well for the music legend.
In a statement unearthed by Letters Of Note, Sgt James C. Spears wrote a report on Hendrix in 1962. In it he describes how he “plays a musical instrument and has let this interfere with his military duties in so much as missing bed check and not getting enough sleep,” before adding “he has no interest whatsoever in the Army.”
And when he wasn’t practising riffs, he was playing with his private plectrum…
Spears writes: “Approximately one month ago…when he was found to be missing, Sp Mattox and Pvt Stroble began to look for him and later found him in the latrine masturbating.”
The report ends with the suggestion that Hendrix should duly discharged – and thank God he was.
Stick to what you’re good at eh…
