Disney are definitely thanking so many of us for being their guests this weekend…
The $160 million live-action adaptation of Beauty & The Beast just opened to $170 million in the U.S. alone, with an additional $180 million worldwide, which means there have been a lot of broken records.
First up, those numbers make it the biggest opening weekend for a PG movie, both in America – where the previous record holder was Finding Dory with $135 million – and internationally.
It also beat the opening weekend numbers of last year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which banked $166 million in the first three days, to become the biggest opening weekend ever in March.
The $170 million makes it the seventh biggest weekend of all time, and the second biggest not to be released in summer, in both cases the top entry is Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $248 million opening.
So what does all that mean?
Probably that we should get used to seeing a lot more live-action fairy-tale adaptations in the next few years…
