Lock and load.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. There have been very few decent films that were based on video games.
Assassin’s Creed, Max Payne, Doom, Hitman and Super Mario Bros. are just some examples of this, but it appears that the makers of the Call of Duty games, Activision Blizzard, are taking a different approach by replicating one of the world’s most beloved studios.
In an interview with The Guardian, the co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios, Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, have revealed that they’re looking to emulate the approach that Marvel has used to create its shared universe in both TV and film.
After developing various different scripts and conducting extensive military research, it appears that the plans for Call of Duty universe have been mapped out which “will draw on the feel of the different incarnations of the game rather than transposing existing plots.”
In fact, the first adaptation of the beloved game could arrive as soon as 2018.
Sher has produced a plethora of Quentin Tarantino’s films and she’s incredibly optimistic that films and TV shows based on Call of Duty film will be incredibly successful.
“We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on,” she said.
Van Dyk adds: “It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope … a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie.”
Regarding the Call of Duty TV show, it’s reported that any series will be focused on historical conflicts like World War 2 and the Vietnam War. The aim is to create something like Marvel have done with their four shows that are on Netflix: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
This could be something special.
