‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ director Richard Linklater talks to JOE about the ’80s, frat boys, jocks, and partying

Boys will be boys

Declan Cashin

Everybody Wants Some!! is a new movie that looks set to become a classic in record short time.

It’s the new nostalgic comedy written and directed by Richard Linklater, the man behind Dazed And Confused, as well as Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight, School Of Rock, and the Oscar-winning Boyhood.

The movie is set in 1980 (but is still very ’70s in the fashion and music senses), and takes place over one weekend before a group of baseball-player jock students commence college life.  It’s about a group of guys becoming friends as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised, hard-drinking, bong-sucking adulthood.

Everybody Wants Some!! has been grabbing four and five star reviews across the board, and already looks set to be one of the best-reviewed movies of 2016. It is enormous fun to watch, and a lot of the credit must go to the new and rising stars in the cast, including Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Ryan Guzman, Wyatt Russell, Juston Street, Austin Amelio, Will Brittain, and Glenn Powell.

JOE caught up with director Richard Linklater and star Tyler Hoechlin to talk about porn moustaches, boys becoming men, and why movie jocks aren’t always total douchebags.
