First Dates returned and people were talking about a very awkward subject

Paul Moore

The ultimate test.

There’s a wonderful line in High Fidelity that perfectly describes a core rule of dating. “What really matters is what you like, not what you are like… Books, records, films — these things matter. Call me shallow but it’s the fuckin’ truth,” said Rob.

It’s hard to argue against.

We’ve all had a few interesting first dates where even of you’re attracted to someone, the spark just isn’t there and you just can’t put your finger on the reason why. We’d wager that a lagging conversation and a lack of shared interests are some of the reasons why.

Then again, maybe you’re really, really, really ridiculously good looking and can compensate for these things. If that’s the case, fair play to you!

First Dates returned to our screen as a new batch of singletons entered the restaurant looking for love.

Fred & Lettie were just two of the people that were hoping to find a new relationship and ‘remain’ happy in it, but as with every romance, there’s always a chance that they could ‘leave’ in a disgruntled manner.

Cambridge graduate Fred was matched with political activist Lettie, however they struggle to make a connection with their Brexit-based differences. This being said, the two did find common ground and strike an accord – a political detente if you will.

Given the heated political climate that exists in Britain, it appears that Fred and Lettie’s romance really did strike a chord.
