If you haven’t seen the most recent Game of Thrones episode, Beyond the Wall, consider this to be your spoiler alert.
Right, who felt like they were actually fighting in that frozen lake after seeing those frantic and visceral final 30 minutes of the most recent Game of Thrones episode?
To be honest, we wouldn’t blame you if you happened to miss some of the deaths, fights, skirmishes and fires that roared through that finale because we barely had a moment to catch our breath.
Shattered White Walkers, frantic chases, wights biting at flesh, swords on fire, zombie polar bears, desperate last stands, perilous danger, epic swordplay, dragon fire and The Hound embracing his inner 8-year-old by chucking a rock at some ‘dumb cunt’ of a wight were all on offer.
It was furious, ferocious and fantastic to watch.
All this without mentioning *that* moment.
Prior to Viserion’s resurrection as an ice dragon by the Night King, Thrones fans were perplexed by a curious detail concerning Jon’s beloved sword, Longclaw.
As we know, Longclaw is a Valyrian steel sword and has the ability to turn White Walkers into shards of ice – something that Jon is very good at doing.
Earlier in the episode, Jon tried to return Longclaw to Jorah Mormont because the weapon has belonged to House Mormont for centuries. As we saw, Jorah refused Jon’s kind offer because he still carries that burden from the shame he brought onto his house. In case you don’t know, when Jorah still lived on Bear Island, he sold slaves to fund his wife’s extravagant lifestyle and broke his father’s heart.
Well, thank God that Jon managed to hold onto the weapon because it proved to be vital in that epic battle against the army of the undead.
When Tormund, The Hound, Jorah etc were just about to climb Drogon and flee, Jon sacrificed himself to hold back the encroaching army of wights.
During that skirmish, the King in the North was pulled under the ice by a pack of viscous wights and it looked like he was about to die. Before hitting the water, Jon drops Longclaw on the ice before he goes into the cold abyss.
As we all know, Jon Snow will fight until his very last breath and he somehow managed to make it out of the freezing water alive. What unfolded next has led some Game of Thrones fans to believe that his sword might have more magical properties than we knew.

Yes, some people believe that wolf’s eye on the pommel appears to open.
Granted, in a show that features dragons, the undead, resurrection, telepathy, time travel, magic and psychic abilities, anything is possible.
However, we’re going to be party poopers and say that the ‘darkening’ of Longclaw’s eye was either caused by 1) the water splashing as Jon emerged from the lake, or 2) a shadow from Jon’s glove that reflects against the jewel in Longclaw’s eye.
Still though, it’s nice to see that Jon put it to good use!
