It had been coming, but people didn’t like it
At this point we are giving you one big bad spoiler alert. Don’t go past this sentence if you’ve not watched season eight, episode five of Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones is hurtling maniacally towards its conclusion with the poise and grace of Micky Quinn running down a steep hill. The final season feels like it is being rushed and subsequently damaged beyond all repair, and it is being evidenced in arcs of the show’s main characters.
In Sunday morning/Monday night’s episode, ‘The Bells’, we saw an extraordinary example of this in how the show’s writers have handled the arc of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.
Fated as the queen who would finally end tyranny and bring peace to the Seven Kingdoms, Dany was consistently and quite obnoxiously put forward by the show’s creators as the one true hope in Westeros.
In a few short episodes, they have changed her character completely, and turned her into the show’s greatest villain.
First we had Cersei, then the Night King, then Cersei again – but no, it is Dany, flying furiously over King’s Landing while she burns everyone in sight that has stepped up to the singed plate with just one episode left.
It’s not that there has been some foreshadowing here. Her father was called The Mad King, and Dany has shown a propensity for a lack of mercy on occasion, but her acts of cruelty were always tempered by her desire to make the world better.
That all went out the window during ‘The Bells’, and fans of the show are absolutely fuming about it.

The main issue that people seem to have with Dany’s switch to the dark side is the fact that it actually made no sense. Sure, she has lost many of those close to her, but with Jon still there – despite their complicated relationship – she was so bloody close.
Overall, it is yet another example of the writers of Game of Thrones trying to wrap things up nicely. And it has turned out annoying everyone.
