Have you ever been able to talk your way out of a speeding ticket?
Did you pretend you had an emergency, concoct an elaborate lie about your partner being in labour, or just simple break down in tears?
Well, that’s one way of doing it. But what if you’re the star of the biggest television shows in the world, and have some classified information about the fate of your character?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know what happened to Jon Snow in this season of Game Of Thrones.
Actor Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow, was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and he revealed that he once weaselled his way out of a speeding ticket by telling a police officer what happened to Snow.
He explained: “I was driving back from my parents’ house, and I was going too fast, I was over the speed-limit. I hear the sirens go off behind me, and this police man pulls me over. I was a bit sheepish saying, ‘Sorry, I didn’t realise how fast I was going’. The officer said, ‘You do realise how fast you were going? That’s a bookable offence’.
“Then he said, ‘Look, there’s two ways we can do this: follow me back to the police station now and I’ll book you in, or you can tell me if you live in the next series of Game Of Thrones. I laughed, but his face was like stone. He said, ‘I have to tell you, whether I bring you in to the station depends on what answer you give. So I looked at him and said, ‘Erm, I’m alive next season’, and he said, ‘Hmm. On your way, Lord Commander’.”
This is the latest anecdote from Harington about the eight-month experience of keeping one of the biggest secrets in TV history. After Snow’s fate was official revealed to the world two weeks ago, Harington apologised for all his lies and misdirection, telling EW:
“I’d like to say sorry for lying to everyone. I’m glad that people were upset that he died. I think my biggest fear was that people were not going to care. Or it would just be, ‘Fine, Jon Snow’s dead.’ But it seems like people had a similar to the Red Wedding episode, kind of grief about it. Which means something I’m doing — or the show is doing — is right.”
