The series creator insists they will “fight for the truth”.
One of Netflix’s most-watched series, Making a Murderer, will get a new follow-up this year entitled Convicting a Murderer that will tackle the infamous Steven Avery case from the perspective of both the law enforcement officers and district attorney Ken Kratz.
When it was released in 2015, Making a Murderer drew criticism for being biased in Avery’s favour, but creator Shawn Rech has pointed to the fact that originally the law enforcement side of the story would not be part of the documentary, leading to a one-sided analysis of the case.
He has stated that this time around the docu-series will “examine the case and the allegations of police wrongdoing from a broader perspective. It will also share with viewers the traumatic effects of being found guilty and vilified in the court of public opinion.
“We fight for the truth. We’ll present all of the evidence in the Avery case from the perspective of both the prosecution and the defense and see if viewers feel the same way they did two years ago following the first season of Making A Murderer.”
The first series centred upon the murder of Teresa Halbach and the controversy surrounding Steven Avery’s guilt, and was filmed over the course of ten years.
The story became even more fascinating when Avery’s cousin, Brendan Dassey, was also found guilty of murder before the verdict was overturned after it was decided his confession had been coerced back in 2016.
The new series will arrive on Netflix later this year and will likely leave viewers glued to their seats much like the original.
