Robert De Niro shouts “f**k Trump” live on TV at the Tony Awards

James Dawson

Although it was censored by most broadcasters, not all of them managed to stop it from being aired

Robert De Niro laid into US President Donald Trump during the live television broadcast of the Tony Awards ceremony last night – shouting ‘fuck Trump’ to rapturous applause.

The 74-year-old actor was appearing at New York’s Radio City Music Hall to introduce Bruce Springsteen, however, instead he took to stage and said: “I’m gonna say one thing. Fuck Trump,” as he raised his fists, “it’s no longer down with Trump. It’s fuck Trump.”

He added of Springsteen: “Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else and even more importantly in these perilous times, you rock the vote, always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government. Boy, do we need that now.”

Although the CBS network censored the Raging Bull actor, Australians were treated to the rant in its full glory. Watch it here:

The denunciation is less of a surprise when you consider that a month before Trump was elected, De Niro made a video in which he called him a ‘pig’ and a ‘bullshit artist’.

“[Trump’s] so blatantly stupid,” he said. “He’s a punk. He’s a dog. He’s a pig. He’s a con. He’s a bullshit artist.

“He’s an idiot. He’s an embarrassment. He talks about how he wants to punch people in the face, well, I’d like to punch him in the face.”

A CBS spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline: “Mr De Niro’s comments were unscripted and unexpected. The offensive language was deleted from the broadcast.”
