Simpsons writer says episode that predicted Donald Trump’s presidential bid was “a warning”

If Donald Trump does find himself sitting behind a desk in the Oval Office in the months ahead, we can’t say we weren’t told to expect it.

Trump’s bid to be President of the Land of Opportunity was predicted in an episode of The Simpsons, ‘Bart to the Future’, which aired nearly 16 years ago. Now one of its writers, Dan Greaney, has claimed the episode was “a warning” to America.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Greaney explained that the idea of Trump taking charge of the White House was seen as the perfect way of suggesting that America’s future wasn’t so rosy.

“It was a warning to America. And that just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”

As can be seen in the video below, the episode depicts Bart visiting sister Lisa, who has assumed the role of US President from Trump.

When in conversation with her staff, Lisa is informed that the country is broke as a result of her predecessor’s time in office (skip to around the 2:20 mark).

“The important thing is that Lisa comes into the presidency when America is on the ropes and that is the condition left by the Trump presidency,” Greaney continues.

“What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her.”
