SoulTwins: Tune for the Weekend

Nooruddean Choudry

Each week our resident DJs, the Soultwins, select a classic record from their extensive collection to get you in the mood for the weekend…

Keeping It Moving – A Tribe Called Quest

Soultwin Stu:

“As we’re off to see Phife [Dawg] in Manchester on Saturday, I felt we ought to select a Tribe song, and none of them get the shoulders shaking like this one!

“Q-Tip must have some record collection; I never knew about the Howard Roberts sample Roadwork, which is unrecognisable here. The man is an absolute genius – not only as a producer, but as an MC.

“He has one of the most original and soulful flows in hip-hop, and it’s showcased brilliantly on this track, as Phife’s is. Although I still don’t know what Jarobi does…”

Soultwin Jeff:

“I love the production and the vocals on this track – both are equally slick.

“Even though it’s not that well known, it still goes down a storm when I play it out. It rarely leaves my bag when I DJ.

“Tribe are still the hip-hop group I crave to see tour in the UK. I hope Phife pulls it off on Saturday, as he’s still my favourite funky diabetic…”
