SoulTwins: Tune for the Weekend

Nooruddean Choudry

Each week our resident DJs, the Soultwins, select a classic record from their extensive collection to get you in the mood for the weekend…

We Almost Lost Detroit – Gil Scott Heron

Soultwin Stu:

“In the days before you could buy anything at the click of a button, I spent years trying to track this record down. I scoured the shelves of many a record shop, only for my brother to buy the last copy in Bleaker Bobs in New York! (I was mortified).

“It’s in my top five records that I own now though, as I thankfully found a copy shortly after the trauma of NYC. Just listen to those keys, that vocal – it’s incredible. The man was a pioneer. I was so lucky I was able to see him live in Manchester shortly before he passed away.

“I sat in awe on the second row as he sang this live; hushed reverence from the entire crowd. When I hear it I just have to sit back and smile. It’s a great end-of-night tune too, and easily my favourite soul song about a near miss nuclear meltdown.”

Soultwin Jeff:

“There is so much to love. From the album sleeve, to the timeless classic tracks; the meaning of the lyrics, to the amount of people who have sampled his music over the years.

“These are just some of the numerous reasons why I adore this man’s music. Like Stu I am so thankful I finally got to see him live, before it was too late.

“He’s left us with some back catalogue, but I always end up back at this tune. Sublime.”
