Old letter reveals that Obi Wan thought Star Wars was a bit rubbish

Matt Tate

Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Sir Alec Guinness wasn’t a big fan of Star Wars in the early days.

A note written by the late actor to his friend Anne Kauffman was read aloud by Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac at a special Letters Live event in London, and it wasn’t kind to George Lucas’s script.

“New rubbish dialogue reaches me every other day on wadges of pink paper, and none of it makes my character clear or even bearable,” he wrote.

Later on in the letter Guinness also struggled to recall the name of his soon-to-be internationally famous co-star Harrison Ford, talking about his scenes with “Mark Hamill and Tennyson (that can’t be right) Ford. Ellison? No! Well a rangy, languid man who is probably intelligent and amusing.”

Despite his reservations, Guinness would go on to to receive an Oscar nomination for his role in the 1977 movie. It must have been the best rubbish thing he ever did.
