The trailer for James McAvoy’s new film has dropped entitled ‘My Son’. But unlike other blockbusters this film had no script, and McAvoy improvised all of his scenes.
James McAvoy has been involved in a very interesting project with Peacock, the US-based streaming platform owned by NBC. It may not yet have the pulling power of Netflix or Amazon, but it steadily putting a slew of original content and this latest film is certainly one that has caught our attention.
McAvoy has been involved in some great stuff – Split, Filth and Shameless, just to name a few – but his new movie, My Son, is unlike virtually any other (almost), as it has no script the Scotsman improvised all of his scenes. Impressive stuff.

As the trailer reads, My Son is a “groundbreaking filmmaking achievement where both actor and audience uncover the mystery at the exact same time”.
As the title suggests, this thriller follows a father, Edmund Murray, who goes looking for his seven-year-old son. Starring alongside ex-wife Claire Foy (The Crown, Girl in the Spider’s Web, Unsane), the pair must deal with the reality of their missing child and the realisation that he has been kidnapped.
The film is actually a remake of a French film of the same name, Mon Garcon – and the leading actor in that, Guillaume Canet, wasn’t provided with a script before getting stuck into that, either.
The film has been directed by the same bloke, too: Christian Carion – the 58-year-old Frenchman made the original four years ago and is still at the helm for the remake.
My Son is released on Peacock via NBCUniversal on September 15th in the US, but we’ll still have to wait until hear about a UK release date. We can’t wait to see how they executed what sounds like a very tricky concept.
