“Some motherf**ers are always trying to ice-skate uphill.”
Before the Avengers Assembled, Batman got all Dark Nighty Knight and Spider-Man swang onto our screens, there was one comic book film that kick-started the current trend of superhero films.
Nearly 20 years ago, Blade burst onto our screens in a haze of gore, brilliant fight sequences, exploding vampires and a soundtrack that could raise the dead. As mentioned previously, we think now is the perfect time to bring the Daywalker back and Wesley Snipes agrees.
Aside from being one of the coolest characters in any comic-book film – seriously, who else can deliver a line like ‘can you blush’ and make it sound cool? – the success of Logan and Deadpool has shown that film fans are ready to embrace R-rated comic-book films. Here’s hoping that the studios are listening.
With Black Panther set to be released, Snipes gave an interview to the Hollywood Reporter about his previous plans to bring that particular character to screen. Naturally, the conversation moved onto Snipes’ most famous character and it appears that he still has some unfinished business with the undead.
“I am very much open to all of the possibilities. If Blade 4 comes along, that is a conversation we can have. And there are other characters in the Marvel universe that, if they want to invite me to play around with, I am with that too. I think the fans have a hunger for me to revisit the Blade character, so that could limit where they could place me as another character in that universe,” he said.
As stated previously, we’d love to see a stripped back and violent take on the character, but if Snipes was set to be involved, perhaps he could take on the mentor role – just like Whistler did in the original? Snipes is 55-years-old but at least that angle would make sense.
During an older interview with JoBlo, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seemed enthusiastic about the idea. He said: “We think it would be cool. Someday. My tenure at Marvel started 17 years ago, and there were two things that sort of launched the modern era. One was X-Men, which was the first thing that people said, ‘Oh, there’s life here.’ But a few years before that, there was Blade. A character nobody had heard of at all, had only appeared in a few issues of Tomb of Dracula or something, turned into a big franchise. That was always a great lesson for me, where you go, ‘It doesn’t matter how well known the character is, it matters how cool the movie is.’ Which, many years later, would be the reason we do Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange. I think Blade is a legacy character now, and I think it would be fun to do something with him one day.”
Either way, we’d love to see Blade back on the big screen.
Altogether now…Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooossssssssssssssssst!
If it does come back, we just have one condition. This NEEDS to be on the soundtrack.
