They want to avoid a ‘pasty war’
Greggs seems like it’s taken over the country recently. Having been a staple up north for years, the company has slowly advanced down south, with 130 new branches planned to be opened in the UK this year alone and its pasty joints even taking over the previously pastry-barren high streets of London.
The company even recently opened up a new store in Britain’s most southern county, Cornwall. However, the shop will not be selling the area’s most famous export, the Cornish pasty, as the company doesn’t want to piss off the locals.
The new chain shop was opened in July at a service station based just off the A38 in Saltash, Cornwall.
The company has never sold any pasties in the West Country as it doesn’t want to create a ‘pasty war’ – with Gregg’s recipes in competition with more traditional recipes sold in local shops.
Don’t worry if you’re heading down there, though, sausage rolls, sandwiches and cakes are all still available to purchase.
A Greggs spokesperson said in a statement prior to the store’s opening: “A new Greggs shop opened at Euro Garages Saltash, Callington Road in July. It is operated under a franchise agreement with Euro Garages and eight new jobs have been created.’
Speaking before the opening, a spokesman said: “Cornwall is the only county where Greggs have yet to open. There is strong demand for the Greggs offer and we look forward to being able to make this available to customers in Cornwall.”
