It looks like TimeSplitters 2, one of the greatest multiplayer shooters of all time, could be getting a remake
Gather round children, and let us tell you about a time before Fortnite. Before PUBG. Before Overwatch, Apex Legends and Destiny. The days of games like TimeSplitters 2.
Back in our day, if you wanted to play a multiplayer deathmatch on your console, you didn’t go online. You had to get three friends over and huddle around your PS2, while the TV screen was split into four.
And there was no better multiplayer firest-person-shooter on the PlayStation 2 than TimeSplitters 2.
The first TimeSplitters came out on the PS2 in 2000, and offered a great time-travelling world to play around in, and excellent multiplayer.
And the 2002’s follow-up was even better, with tons of hilarious characters, and killer four-player deathmatches. Finally, the PlayStation 2 had a multiplayer FPS to compete with GoldenEye.
Now it looks like that the second game is going to get a remake, as publisher THQ Nordic appears to have hidden a sneaky reference in another game.
As reported by GamesRadar, SpellForce 3: Fallen God was released last week, and includes spells that refer to several other of the company’s titles – including TimeSplitters 2.
And that spell seems to confirm that the game is finally getting a remake or remaster or some description.
The spell is actually in French, but the translation reads: “It’s finally coming! The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games.”
There is no official announcement from THQ Nordic yet though.
The series has been dormant since TimeSplitters: Future Perfect was released in 2005, on PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube. A fourth game was announced but never materialised.
However, it was confirmed in 2019 that they were looking to revive the series, with co-creator Steve Ellis being brought on to get things moving.
