Could it possibly live up to THPS though?
The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series is genuinely iconic. Somehow, it managed to appealed to both hardcore skate kids, and those who have never went anywhere near a halfpipe.
Thing was, just rolling through the environments and trying to hit the perfect trick was just such a satisfying experience. That Neversoft engine just played so well. And the soundtrack wasn’t too bad, either.
The series appeared to finish in 2007 with Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground (give or take a few motion-control games and HD remasters), but returned in 2015 with Pro Skater 5. That however got awful reviews, and it has been quiet ever since.
Until now. Hawk lends his name to Tony Hawk’s Skate Jam, which has just appeared on the App store and launches on December 13th. And ok, it is a free-to-play mobile game, which is not a good sign.
However, it still looks pretty fun – it promises a career mode, 15 over different courses and “Global Skate Jam tournaments”. And yes, of course, you can play as Tony Hawk.
This will be the first mobile game with Hawk’s name on it to ever be officially released. Tony Hawk’s Shred Session was due to hit mobile devices in 2014, but after a soft launch it was pulled indefinitely.
Tony Hawk’s Skate Jam is available to pre-order on the App Store now.
