THPS is back
The greatest skateboarding video game of all time is back. The remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is finally released today, and here is the good news: the reviews are in, and they are very positive.
Games Radar gave the game four out of five, saying it is “a fitting remake for two of the best extreme sports games of all-time, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 offers up more than mere nostaglia, but a potential glimpse at what the future of the series could look like.”
IGN called the game “a tremendous turnaround from 2015’s disastrously dismal Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 that it’s difficult to believe they share even a shred of DNA. The accessible yet tricky skating is earnest and old-school fun, the wonderful looking levels are lovingly designed odes to the past, and the music is like the hearty embrace of an old childhood buddy.” They gave it nine out of ten.
Polygon also loved the remake, with the reviewer saying “Everything I love about the original is still here; it’s just a little older, a little kinder, and a lot better looking.”
VG 24/7 gave it a full five stars, saying the developers “should be lauded for twice proving that it is a steward of 90s nostalgia, and that it can reanimate games to be just as good – if not better! – for their second turn under the sun.”
The game currently has a Metacritic score of 88 – which is very good, though not quite as the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 which has a whopping 98.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2, as you can probably tell from the title, is a remake of the first two games of the series, including levels from both instalments. Nearly the entire original soundtrack is there as well, with only three tracks missing for rights reasons. All the original playable characters are back as well, along with a handful of new skaters.
