There are few things worse than thinking you’ve won big money only to miss out at the last minute.
Whether it’s an accumulator let down by an injury-time equaliser, or a lottery win that results in a smaller payout than anticipated.
But few have been as unlucky as one American woman who thought she was in for a life-changing win only to learn she had barely made enough to buy a coffee.

Katrina Bookman shared a selfie with a slot machine display showing apparent winnings of $42.9m (just under £34.5m), WABC reports.
But the slot machine in question was found to have shown the record payout in error, and Bookman was reportedly only offered a steak dinner for her troubles. And we’re pretty sure no steak is worth tens of millions of dollars, however tasty it might be.
The New York mother of four told WABC that it was “hard to cope”, while her lawyer is reportedly pushing for her to at least receive the maximum payout on the machine – the notably smaller $6,500 (£5,221.62).
Under the terms of the machine, a malfunction is said to void all wins, explaining why the casino in question – Resorts World Casino in New York – has not paid out.
