6 basic but vital tips to help you secure that dream job

JOE

There’s no question, job interviews can be intimidating.

However, with the right preparation, some self-belief, and sticking to a few golden rules, you can land that dream job you’ve been looking for.

Some of this sounds like common sense, but it’s amazing how far following all the basics will get you.

Be on time

This, at first glance, sounds like the most obvious statement in history, but it’s so important.

It’s not so much about getting this one right, rather ensuring that you don’t get it wrong.

Put simply, arriving late for an interview immediately halves your chances of landing the job and employers will view it as not just poor punctuality, but also a sign of disrespect.

Dress accordingly

Again, this is a facet of the interview process that can cost you if you don’t get it right.

First impressions are everything, so if you dress to impress then you will definitely be given a fair platform to elaborate on your skill set.

Before you’ve even opened your mouth you’ve demonstrated that you’re taking this opportunity seriously, and your interviewer will reciprocate by showing you respect.

Be straight with your answers

Honestly, honesty goes a long way in the interview process.

It shows a sign of real character and integrity, even if it means admitting that you’re not sure of the answer.

Prospective employers aren’t worried if you’re not always right, what they’re also examining is the type of person you are.

Do your research and listen to your interviewer

In his best-selling classic, How to Win Friends & Influence People, author Dale Carnegie repeats one message throughout in order to be successful – listen.

This is especially relevant in an interview, where listening, responding and asking pro-active questions will get you a long way.

Do your research about the business and use that knowledge in the interview. It’s a sure-fire way to impress.

Ask questions

This is a continuation of the last point, but a crucial follow-up.

Remember, employers are almost certainly weary from having to ask the same questions all the time, so mix it up.

Ask them why this company is better than the rest, their future plans and how the interviewer got involved in the business. It shows assertiveness and confidence.

Finally, don’t be afraid to show off

So, you’re on time, you’re looking well, you’re prepared and you’re confident. Now, remember, you are selling yourself.

This is a sales pitch, so don’t bother being humble. If you’ve achieved a lot already then don’t be shy, be respectfully boastful.

If you’re just starting out in the working world, then share your professional ambitions and willingness to work at your chosen craft.

There you have it.

Don’t forget, there is a reason you have been called for the interview, so believe and help yourself out by being as prepared as possible.
