If you enjoy having a drink at the airport, there could be bad news coming

Paul Moore

Ah crap.

For many people, a pre-flight drink is an essential part of their travel plans because it has the ability to ‘take the edge off’ for anyone that might be a nervous flyer. Then again, maybe you just fancy starting your holiday early and a quick drink in the departure lounge is the best way to do so.

If you happen to be one of those people that love a tipple before take-off, there could be some bad news ahead.

The House of Lords have published a report that’s calling for tighter rules on selling alcohol at airports.

At present, bars and pubs in airports don’t have to abide by alcohol restrictions law in the Licensing Act 2003.

The Independent are reporting that this desire to tighten the law stems from an increase in the amount of disruptive, abusive and violent passengers.

Budget airline Jet2 contributed to the study and they stated that “these incidents range from passengers being verbally abusive to crew or fellow passengers to incidents which endanger safety, such attempting to open cabin doors.”

Last summer, Jet2 endured 536 disruptive instances and that their figures show “that the number of incidents where the passenger fails to respect the rules of conduct at an airport or on board an aircraft have risen significantly. These incidents range from passengers being verbally abusive to crew or fellow passengers to incidents which endanger safety, such attempting to open cabin doors. Jet2.com have dealt with 536 such disruptive incidents this summer alone, over half are reported to have been fuelled by alcohol,” they said.
