Lidl has scooped one of the major awards at the World Whiskies Awards
Lidl’s own brand of whisky has won big at this year’s World Whiskies Awards, where it was named ‘Best Scotch Whisky’.
The budget supermarket chain’s Queen Margot whisky, which retails at just £13.49 for a 70cl bottle, saw off competition from several well known brands – including Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch Whisky – after impressing over 40 international industry experts.
Meeting at several gatherings in December, January and February in destinations such as Edinburgh, Melbourne and Tel Aviv, it was eventually concluded by the experts that Lidl’s whisky was the best around.
According to its description on Lidl’s website, Queen Margot whisky is mellowed for eight years in oak casks and claims to give a smooth texture and a warm finish.
Lidl says this process gives the drink ‘soft aromas of dried apricot and plum, a rich sweetness and depth of flavour’. Lovely.
