McDonalds adds beer to menu at more restaurants – could the UK be next?

Tom Victor

We’ve all had that holy grail moment when entering a continental McDonalds.

Slightly different sandwiches? Great. Croissants for breakfast? Extravagant. But beer on the menu? That’s the real prize.

It’s already a staple in France and Germany, and now another country – South Korea – is set to follow suit.

The new ‘Premium’ McDonald’s restaurant will also serve a new range of high-end burgers, according to The Chosunilbo.

If successful, it will be the first of three South Korean branches to offer alcoholic drinks – the first three in Asia.

But the question on all our lips is whether this could lead to a McDonald’s beer revolution here in the UK.

The official McDonald’s line at present is: “This is not something that we have experienced customer demand for or something that fits with the family-friendly focus of our restaurants in the UK.”

To us, that looks like a ‘not yet’ rather than a firm no – certainly the door is not firmly closed, and with the chain set to remove toys from Happy Meals, perhaps a move away from the ‘family-friendly’ approach has already begun.
