‘Next thing i knew, I was holding a baby’s head’
A woman got the shock of her life when she gave birth alone in the shower – having had no idea she was pregnant.
Already a mum-of-two, Dimitty Bonnet, 28, had given up hopes of having another child and was left utterly dumbfounded when she felt the sudden urge to push while in the shower – catching the baby’s head between her legs.
Dimitty and husband, Jason, 42, a sign writer – who are parents to Nate, 5, and Darci, 3 – thought that their family was complete and had stopped trying to have any more children.
Dimitty had regular periods and had even done a negative pregnancy test a few weeks before the surprise birth at 1.30am on 26th February 2022.
The first sign she had was that the evening before the birth she felt “a bit off.”
The admin manager from New South Wales, Australia said she had “assumed it was just a bit of lockdown weight” when she put on a few pounds.
She said: “I’d flown on a plane a month before, and even had an x-ray after a rugby injury six weeks before I gave birth. There was no part of me that thought I could be expecting – to be sure I even took a test a month before giving birth and it came back negative.
“The evening before he was born, I just felt a bit yuck. My stomach felt a bit off, so I put the kids to bed and got an early night myself.
“I woke up around 1am, and felt so uncomfortable. It was like I really needed the toilet, but I wasn’t able to go.
“The pain started to get worse, so I decided to have a shower to make myself feel better.
“I didn’t want to wake my husband, so I kept the light off and showered in the dark.
“I felt a sudden urge to push, and the next thing I knew, I was holding a baby’s head.”
In the early hours of the morning, Dimitty gave birth to little Harvey (SWNS)Dimitty managed to sit down on the floor in the dark, and after a final push, gave birth to her baby in the early hours of February 26 2022.
Her husband Jason was understandably shocked when he walked into the bathroom to find his wife cradling their newborn.
The pair then called an ambulance, which arrived 15 mins later and helped the mother deliver the placenta and cut the umbilical cord.
After checking that mother and baby were both fine, the family were taken to Campbelltown Hospital, New South Wales, where they were monitored for 24 hours.
The couple named their baby boy Harvey Eric Barry Timmins.
Dimitty and Jason’s family and friends have all rallied round to support the couple with the surprise new addition to the family (SWNS)They then facetimed their two other children, telling Nate and Darci that “Mummy has a surprise,” before showing them their new sibling.
Dimitty said that the first few days after Harvey’s birth were “a bit of a blur” but that all their family and friends have come together to help them out and support them.
“He’s such an amazing baby and we feel so lucky to have him join the family, even if it was quite a shock at first,” she continued.
Jason added: “He’s a precious little man but it was the biggest shock of my life.”
