He’s still growing!
A woman’s Maine Coon cat has grown so enormous that he is often mistaken for a dog – and the best bit? He’s still a growing boy.
Yulia Minina from Stary Oskol, Russia, bought Kefir two years ago when he was still tiny. While Kefir currently weighs 12.5kg (two stone), he is likely to grow even larger as Maine Coons usually continue to grow until they are four years old.
“I could not even think that an ordinary baby can become so big,” Minina said.
While Kefir, who is named after the milk drink for his white coat, has undoubtedly grown, Minina said he is also “very smart and always behaves calmly.”
She added: “The look is generally like that of a person, and Kefir has a formidable appearance, but he is a very affectionate and modest child.”
Minina said that regular visitors have come to love Kefir but new people are confused, with some people mistaking him for a dog.
However Kefir’s size comes with its own complications, namely at bed time.
“At night he likes to climb on me and sleep. When he was a kitten, it didn’t cause me any inconvenience,” Minina explained.
“But now he has become big and heavy, and, of course, it is difficult to sleep like that.”
With Kefir set to grow more, poor Yulia is in for some further sleepless nights.
Images of Kefir are impressive but pictures of Yulia carrying the cat show just how big he is. He looks more akin to a lion than a tabby cat, so much so that Yulia had to clarify that Kefir was not photoshopped.
