Find out how much damage a nuclear bomb would do to your city

'Tis the season for virtually nuking a city of your choice

Simon Lloyd

Entertaining friends and family this Christmas?

If you are, there will naturally come a time in the day when the presents have been unwrapped, the turkey has been eaten and conversation between you and your loved ones has run dry. As per usual, Christmas telly will be shit and you’ll find yourself a bit stuck for things to do.

Fear not though, JOE reader – help is at hand.

What better way to occupy your guests this festive season than to make them aware of precisely how devastating a nuclear bomb would be if detonated near to their home?

Fortunately, you can do just that.

Online tool NUKEMAP has been around for a few years, but has recently gone viral after being featured in the Data is Beautiful section of Reddit.

It allows users to type in the name of a city or town they’d like to nuke (in a virtual sense, obviously) as well as selecting the size of the weapon.

After this, they are presented with a map such as the one below – showing exactly how much damage such a bomb would cause.

Handily, the colour-coded circles give information about the fireball radius, radiation radius, air blast radius and thermal radiation radius.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
