Chunky soldiers have been ordered to attend army ‘fat clubs’ after medical checks ruled
some troops are too overweight to fight.
The Mirror report that a diet of fry-ups for breakfast and chips with every meal has led to a number of soldiers being ‘medically downgraded’ ahead of planned tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, with senior officers forced to step in.
A new Defence Operational Fitness Programme has been drawn up for tubsters after 16,400 troops were classed as obese between 2010 and September 2014, according to Ministry of Defence figures.
L Col Brian Dupree, of Army Health, told the Mirror: “We have concerns about obesity across the Army. The general population is getting bigger and the Army suffers from that as well.”
