Over half of Brits lie about their relationships on social media

It's complicated...

Kevin Beirne

According to a new survey of men and women in the UK, more than half of Britons lie about their relationship status online.

Of the 54% of respondents who admitted lying about their romantic status, more than three quarters said that their profile listed them as single even though they were in a relationship.

While wanting to appear desirable to others was the main reason given, a whopping one third of the fibbers said they did so because they hoped to have an affair over social media.

The survey, carried out by VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, found that one in five people felt their relationship was not yet serious enough to broadcast online, while 28% said they pretended to be single because they were embarrassed about their current relationship.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of respondents said that their partner was not aware they had listed themselves as single, with only 29% ‘fessing up.
