This is why all Heinz ketchup bottles have the words ’57 varieties’ on them

So this is where it comes from...

Ben Kenyon

It’s always been there.

Every time you whack a dollop on a bacon butty, dunk a chip in it or smother your full English in it, it’s there staring you in the face.

But what’s it all about? What do the words ’57 varieties’ on every bottle of Heinz tomato ketchup actually mean?

It’s probably something you instantly recognise, but have never questioned…until now, the day that Heinz’s famous old red sauce turns 140 years old.

There’s obviously a story behind it – and it’s a strange one.

You’d imagine it’s probably because Heinz have 57 products out there on the market. But if you’ve ever been down the sauces aisle in your local supermarket, you’ll know there’s way, way more than that.

In fact there’s a hundreds times that – with Heinz banging out 5,700 varieties, including dozens of different types of ketchup alone. (‘Heinz 5,700 Varieties’ just doesn’t have the same ring to it.)

The reason for that magic number goes back to 1896 with the company’s founder Henry J Heinz.

According to the Heinz website, he was riding a train when he spotted a shoe advert that caught his eye.

‘While riding a train in New York City in 1896, Henry Heinz saw a sign advertising 21 styles of shoes, which he thought was clever.

‘Although Heinz was manufacturing more than 60 products at the time, Henry thought 57 was a lucky number.

‘So, he began using the slogan “57 Varieties” in all his advertising. Today the company has more than 5,700 products around the globe, but still uses the magic number of “57”.’

You can bet that this brilliant little piece of trivia will pop up in a pub quiz or if you’re ever on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. You’ll thank us one day.
