If you haven’t come across the “Boaty McBoatface” phenomenon that has rocked the internet the last few days, then you’ve really been missing out.
The public were asked to participate in a poll that would determine what name would be bestowed upon the Natural Environment Research Council’s (NERC) very expensive new research vessel. Boaty McBoatface was the standout candidate.
Given that people clearly have a talent for this stuff, it’s no surprise that similar contests have emerged, with the Twitter hashtag #TheInternetNamesAnimals spawning predictably entertaining results.
