These are the safest 20 airlines in the world

2016 was the second safest year on record for commercial aviation

Air travel remains one of the safest forms of transport going.

In actual fact, the findings of AirlineRatings.com indicate that 2016 was the second safest year on record for commercial aviation, bettered only by 2013.

The folk at the Australian-based consumer aviation website have also recently taken a look at over 425 of the world’s carriers in order to determine which airlines have the best safety records.

After evaluating the airlines based on their standing with international regulators, fatality records over the past decade, the results from an International Air Transport Association (IATA) safety audit, and whether the country from which they originate conforms with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s eight-point safety parameter, the website has now released a list of the world’s 20 safest airlines.

For the fourth year on the spin, Australia’s Qantas tops the list. The airline boasts an impressive fatality free record throughout the jet era, which goes a long way to preserving its place at the top of such a list.

The other 19 airlines that make the list are not ranked and have been listed alphabetically. It should also be noted that the top 20 don’t include any low-cost or boutique carriers, such as EasyJet. These were looked at in a separate bit of research.

The other 19 airlines, in alphabetical order:

Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways,  Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, EVA Air, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airline System, Singapore Airlines, Swiss, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia.

Interestingly, all carriers on the list are from Asia, North America, Oceania, and Europe, with none from South America or Africa making the cut.
