Pete Doherty’s band have thrown their backing behind Margate FC.
In an unexpected move, indie rock band The Libertines have announced that they have decided to sponsor Margate for the season ahead.
The non-league club will sport jerseys with The Libertines’ distinctive logo emblazoned on the front in the Kent-based side’s season opener against Corinthian-Casuals.
The group, which is fronted by Pete Doherty and Carl Barat, announced the news via Twitter on Friday afternoon.

The Libertines rose to prominence in the early 2000s with hits such as Can’t Stand Me Now, Don’t Look Back Into The Sun and Time For Heroes before splitting up in late 2004 due to the strained relationship between the band’s vocalists which was exacerbated by Doherty’s substance abuse.
They reunited a few years ago and are reportedly in the process of building a new studio and hotel in Margate.
And it’s clear that The Libertines want to contribute to the local community.
