The incident is said to have taken place in June of this year
Manchester City are reported to have taken action after it emerged their academy boss used a racial slur to describe black footballers.
According to a report by Darren Lewis in The Mirror, youth scouting and recruitment manager Dean Ramsdale was under investigation after he was heard referring to black players as ‘BBQs’ – said to stand for ‘big, black and quick’. The comment is said to have been made during a meeting about players in early June. Other members of staff from City were present at the time, as were two agents. One of the witnesses was so angered by the comment that they later submitted a formal letter of complaint to the club.
The report claims City have accepted the language used was ‘clumsy and inappropriate’. They are said to have instantly launched their own investigation into the claims, informing their own legal and HR departments before stressing to Ramsdale that such language would not be tolerated. It’s also noted that City sent a letter of apology.
The Mirror add that it’s unclear if City now consider the matter to have been resolved.
Ramsdale started working for the Premier League champions last summer. A former Barnsley player, he had previously been academy boss at Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday. He had also worked at Burnley and been director of youth at Preston North End.
