The attack happened in 2017
A Russian-born German man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempting to bomb the Bourissia Dortmund team coach.
The incident happened before their April 2017 Champions League quarter-final match against AS Monaco. The tie was postponed for 24 hours, with Dortmund fans memorably opening their doors to stranded away fans.
29-year-old Sergei Wenergold had intended to make money from the attack, having bet on a fall in Dortmund’s stock price following the bombing.
Wenergold hid bombs packed with metal pins in a hedge, which exploded as the team’s bus went past.
He was convicted on Tuesday on 28 counts of attempted murder, and sentenced to 14 years by 14 years by the Dortmund state court.
Spanish defender Marc Barta and a police officer were injured in the explosion.
Barta was left with a fractured wrist, and required surgery, though returned to training 29 days after the operation.
The police officer suffered hearing loss.
Wenergold told a court in Dortmund in January that he had not intended to kill anyone in the attack.
